Last year, the Department of Parks and Public Works began renovations of the ballfields at Fairmont Park. The scope of work included grading, irrigation, seeding, field amenities, dugouts, and fencing work to make the fields playable again for a new generation of Dom Aitro Baseball League participants.
As part of this work, the City also repaired the walkway and railings near one of the ballfields. The repairs to the railings will required that the entire railings be repainted so that the metal could be better protected from the weather. The City asked the Quinnipiac East Management Team (QEMT) to poll the community to determine which color would be most agreeable to users of Fairmont Park based on the Sherwin Williams color wall.
Voting on the colors was done using ranked choice voting, a system that allows voters to arrange their choices in order of preference rather than selecting just one option. This process was also used to select the new color for the Grand Avenue Bridge based on input from over 300 community members.
10 colors were suggested by community members and illustrated to show their aesthetics; additional choices were submitted as write-in options.
Thank you to community members and park stakeholders for taking time to participate in the vote! It was a close contest between Hyper Blue and Greenbelt, but Hyper Blue has emerged as the winner on a weighted tiebreaker. The complete rundown of results for each round is available at https://rankedchoices.com/results using the shortcode FairmontRailings.
Community painting days were held on June 11 and June 18. QEMT is especially grateful to Katherine Jacobs, Chief Landscape Architect for the City of New Haven. She graciously assisted us with painting on both days and made sure that we had all of the materials needed to properly prepare and paint the railings.
